Last Lecture

WOW, the semester is over. I have learned so much in this class. In my last blog, we were asked to give out "last lecture". If I had one final lecture to share with a group, it would be the following. We must decided early on what kind of person you want to be. What do you want your code of conduct to be? What moral compass will you use? And finally, "Who am I" and "Who do I want to become." Two very important questions that we should ask ourselves on a regular basis. The answers will change over time as you grow into the person that you strive to be. I may not know exactly what I want to become at this point, but that is part of the journey that we go through. The key is to believe in yourself and always dream big and take risks. Create your own Personal constitution. Create goals both long term and short term and list how you are going to execute those goals. Create a Stars and Steppingstonges chart to help you along your journey. And lastly, create

An Attitude of Gratitude

This week we spoke a lot about being a lifelong learner. There are so many benefits and blessing that we have from being a lifelong learner. If we do not continually learn, we will be left behind and other will succeed over us. I really enjoyed the talk given by President Monson, An Attitude of Gratitude . He expressed the importance of showing gratitude to others. He spoke about some of his professors and primary teachers who had made a very significance influence on his life and that he was grateful for them. I have learned that I need to express my gratitude more for the people who have left a huge influence over me and where I currently am in my life. We also spend a great deal of time talking about a case study about Randy Haykin. He had a great working experience and gathered up as many learning opportunities that he could, so that he could go on and start-up his own business. I admire him for the challenges he was able to overcome and how he was able to apply the lessons of

What’s a Business For?

It was a super crazy week for me. Not only did I have all my assignments from this class, but I had a presentation to put together and I worked almost 50 or more hours.. I am beat.  There was a lot of great information that came out of the readings/videos this week. I read a great article called  Microlending: Toward a Poverty-Free World.  I was not aware of what microlending was until I read this article by Muhammad Yunus. He spoke about how poor the people who in Bangladesh and how they worked so hard for the little money that they received. He decided to give a loan of $27 to 42 people. He went to the bank to see if he could get the bank to give out loans to the poor and they refused. The bank said they were not creditworthy. So Yunus took it upon himself to test the theory. At this point all of the people he had given loans to had already paid them back i full. So he went from village to village helping the poor. But the bank did not want to take that into account so he gave up o

Attitude on Money

I had a great week. The lessons this week were very relatable to my current situation. I enjoyed the case study activity. There was some great information shared through the discussion group this week. One person said:  "W ork and family cannot be separated one from the other. We need to work to support our family, and working is an expression of love towards them, providing for them. However, we need to remember that our family needs also to be provided with emotions, love, teachings, that can be provided when we spend time with them." This really touched me. I know there are some areas that I can work better at. It was nice to see that other people had some of the same ideas. The case studies gave me great ways to help support my family and ensure that they are number 1 in my life. I am grateful for that. This week we also read an article called Attitude for Money by Stephen W. Gibson. One of my favorite quotes from this was:   "The possession of excess Money

Entrepreneur Interview

This week was a little rough. Between both of my classes there was a lot of work that needed to be done. And I have been working 50-60 hours a week that last few weeks. So it has been challenging to get everything done in time and manage my workload. But I know that in the long run everything is worth it! The last few weeks we have been working on putting together our Entrepreneur Interview questions and then doing our interview. I chose to interview one of my co-workers. Andrew Woodard is a Senior Project Manager for Team Electric. We are an electrical subcontractor. He is very successful in his position and he is able to bring in a lot of clients/projects and money each year. A few years ago Andrew decided to start his own company. Its kind of a consulting company. He manages several large projects out of state and works with all of the different companies to ensure that the jobs get done. I am still working on putting my paper together, but he has been a great role model for me in

Hang in and Hang On

When reading The Five Why’s we learn that “for every technical problem, there’s a human problem that caused it. And if you don’t find out what those human problems are your never really going to learn and make progress.”    This is so true, there are so many people who take the “short road” and only do what they must do, but do not think about the ramification that this can cause in other areas. I have found this a lot in past jobs. People not training people the correct way, please not putting processes together and take the steps to ensure something is done properly. You find this all over. In one of the videos we watched, someone said that we need to find the solutions to the problems first. That if we go into our entrepreneur career thinking this, then we can develop the solutions before to help prevent things in the future. One of my favorite quotes of the week was by Elder Holland “Sometimes days will be long and the journey difficult, but entrepreneurs hold on t

Leadership with a small "L"

President Kim B. Clark of Brigham Young University–Idaho for their commencement on December 14, 2007 gave a great talk about leadership with a small "l". Leadership it role that has shaped the world. Many have taken up its mantle and left their mark on history.   To be that type of great leader you have to   Lead by example   Lead with Vision  Lead with Love. I strive to lead this way today and every day. It is not always easy, but it is something that I work towards every day. I feel like the third principle is the most important. When you show people that you care, it means that you are strive to lift them higher and are doing more for them, than just using them for you own selfish means. Leadership will always be about others and a great leader puts much attention towards that.  I have learned so much in the last 8 weeks. This class has taught me so much about what kind of leader I want to be. I've learned so many different ways of ru
