Lessons About What It Means to Be an Entrepreneur
This week we spoke a lot about what it means to be an Entrepreneur. I had a difficult time this week taking in all of the information. But I did learn so much. We read an article called So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur. There was a lot of great information in there that stood out to me. It spoke about the three areas of knowledge that we need to have as entrepreneurs.
There are three areas of knowledge that are critical for starting a successful business:
There are three areas of knowledge that are critical for starting a successful business:
- In-depth knowledge of the competitive structure of an industry and a network of contacts within that industry
- The skills to run the daily operations of a small, rapidly growing company;
- The ability to raise money
For me, these are thing that I would differently need to work towards. I think that I am able to do some of the things that are needed. I currently run the day to day operations at the company I currently work at. But there is for sure a learning curve to get to a place that you feel comfortable.
We watched several videos this week. I liked the one by Steve Blank. He made a very important statements saying that if you are going to do a start up, then you need to be single. That scared me a little, because I already have a family. But I can see where he would be coming from. A Start up would require a lot of work,. But at the same time, you can still manager it and have a family at the same time. I am not sure I agree with his statement.
I did enjoy the video by Wences Casares. He gave great feed back about what it means to be an Entrepreneur. The one thing that really stood out to me was how valuable our time is. That it is more valuable than capital, assets and much more. That it is even more important than money. I am one of those people that likes to find something I enjoy and stick with it. And if it works out and I can do it for a long time, then that is all the better. I hope that I can be more like him when my time comes.
